The chapter , Deep water was written by William Orville Douglas. It is an autobiographical story in which the author describes how some incidents of his life had instilled the fear of water ( Hydrophobia ) in his heart & mind, and what attempts made by him to overcome the the fear of water ( Hydrophobia ) from him , and how he learned swimming through firm determination, courage, self confidence and will power.
This chapter conveys that it is not death but the fear of death that creates fear in our mind, so that fear needs to be shaken off. Also, any fears can be conquered if we try hard enough.

When the author was three or four years old , he visited a beach in California with his father. He was standing in surf with his father. Suddenly , waves knocked him down and swept over him. He was completely buried in water. His breath was gone. He became frightened. But his father laughed at him. Overpowering waves of water has set the terror of water in his heart. This first accident of his life created the aversion to water in him.
