What is a Sentence ?

A sentence is a word or a group of words in a certain grammatical order which gives a complete sense.

Examples –

  1. Read.
  2. Come.
  3. Solve it.
  4. Go there.
  5. Sleep well.
  6. You are a boy .
  7. Ashok was great.
  8. She  is an honest girl.
  9. India is a great country .
  10. What a piece of work   is man !
  11. To take exercise daily makes us fit .
  12. Open the window first ,then sit down.
  13. Nobody would like to waste his time now a days .
  14. They have complained against the manager many times.
  15. Rajesh  always attends the class an completes his homework.
  16. We can achieve success soon but we should improve our weaknesses.

Types of Sentence

There are following types of Sentences:

  1. Assertive Sentence
  2. Interrogative Sentence
  3. Imperative Sentence
  4. Exclamatory Sentence
  5. Optative Sentence

Assertive Sentence

A sentence that expresses a statement or an assertion is called  an Assertive sentence.     

Structure of Assertive Sentence –
1.Subject  +  Helping Verb + Main Verb + Object +  Other Words .
2.Subject  + Linking Verb + Complement  + Other Words.

Examples –

  1. Life is a stage .
  2. He is a doctor.
  3. To flatter is his best hobby.
  4. Amit has completed his work.
  5. He did not invited in the party.
  6. Kajal  was not in love with you.
  7. To compose poems is my liking .
  8. Nitu is struggling for her career.
  9. Raj can not touch the roof owing to his short stature.
  10. Completing his  work timely is a habit of a good man.
  11. Raju went to Varanasi by bus with his family  to visit  the religious places  and see the new people .

Interrogative Sentence

A sentence that is used to ask a question is called  an Interrogative Sentence.

Types of Interrogative Sentence

  1. Yes / No Question Sentence
  2. Wh-Question Sentence

YES / NO – Question Sentence –

An interrogative sentence that starts from helping /auxiliary verbs and is answered only yes / no is called  Yes / No Question Sentence.

Structure of Yes / No Question Sentence
1.Linking Verb + Subject + Complement  + Others  ?
2.Helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Object +  Others  ?

  2. Is that a hill ?
  3. Is this your field?
  4. Am I your enemy?
  5. Is she your friend  ?
  6. Can Anuj be a thief ?

  15.   Would he not have done this work without his father’s help.?
  16.   Had Anju been participating in the dance practice for last month ?

Wh- Question Sentence

An interrogative sentence that starts with wh-words and is not answered in yes/ no but needs some other information to answer is called Wh- Question Sentence.

These are Wh-Words

What,  When , Where,  Why,  Whom , Whose,  Who , Which  ,  How ,  How Many , How Much,  How Far , How Often, How Frequently ,  How Many Times,  What Kind Of ,   What Type Of,  What Sort Of ……….etc

Structure of Wh- Question Sentence –
1.Wh- word + is/am/are/was/were +Subject  + other words ?
2.Wh-word + helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Object + Others words ?

  2. What should  Neha  not  be in this  professional group  ?   
  3. What are these ?
  4. What troubles you now  ? 
  5. What fruit may cause us to face a lot of problems  ?
  6. Who are you ?
  7. Who helped that man with money ?
  8. Whose father is scolding you to abuse them ?
  9. When have you visited Agra ?
  10. Where had they completed that assigned task ?
  11. Which book do you like most to read ?
  12. What type of house does he like to buy for reading ?
  13. How did this boy solve this difficult question ?
  14. How many students passed this exam ?
  15. How much water do you like to have daily ?

Imperative Sentence-

A sentence that is used to express some order / command, advice, request, prohibition, suggestion, proposal, wish …etc. is called an Imperative Sentence.

Structure of Order

1.Verb I + Object + other words.
2.Don’t + Verb I + Object + other words.

Examples-

  1. Reach the school in time to complete the work.
  2. Help the needy with money .
  3. Have some milk with biscuits in the morning.
  4. Pluck the flowers from the tree to make a garland.
  5. Don’t open the door uselessly.
  6. Do not kill the innocent animals .

Structure of Advice –

1.Verb I + Object + other words.
2.Don’t + Verb I + Object + other words.

Examples-

  1. Always respect your parents.
  2. Always obey your elders.
  3. Don’t waste your time in vain.
  4. Always plant the trees in vacant places.
Structure of Request
1.Please + Verb I + Object + other words.
2.Kindly + Verb I + Object + other words.
3.Verb I + Object + other words, please.

Examples –

  1. Please leave this place immediately .
  2. Please help the poor man with money.
  3. Please don’t open the box with the key.
  4. Kindly collect the answer sheets from the students.
  5. Kindly do not let any body to come in the class.
  6. Shut the door ,please.
Structure of Proposal / Suggestion
1.Let + us + Verb I + Object + Other Words.
2.Let + me + Verb I + Object + Other Words.
3.Let + him / her /them + Verb I + Object + Other Words.

Examples –

  1. Let us go to play cricket.
  2. Let us come to school for study.
  3. Let’s fly the kites on the occasion of Makarsankranti
  4. Let me drink the water .
  5. Let me take the food in afternoon.
  6. Let me help the needy with food.
  7. Let them keep away from rumours.
  8. Let him read this book for your mental development.
  9. Let these students prepare their lessons for board exam .
  10. Let the girl study for the development of society.

Exclamatory Sentence –

A sentence that is used to express some strong and sudden feelings of surprise, sorrow, joy , anger, regret, contempt, hatred ..etc. is called an Exclamatory Sentence.

Structure of Exclamatory Sentence –
1.What + Noun !
2.How + Adjective !
3.How + Adjective + Noun !
4.What + Noun + Subject + Verb !
5.How + Adjective + Noun + Subject + Verb !
6.Exclamatory Word ! + Subject + Verb + Object + Other Words .

Examples –

  1. What a good job !
  2. What a man !
  3. What a dashing personality he has !
  4. How inspirational story !
  5. How attractive you looks today !
  6. How beautiful she looks !
  7. Alas ! she died young.
  8. Hurrah ! Indian cricket team has won the match.
  9. How dare you !
  10. Pooh ! Pooh ! you are liar .
  11. Huzzah ! these students qualified the exam.
  12. Well done ! you have completed the work very well .

Optative Sentence

A sentence that is used to express greetings, wish, prayer, blessings and curse … etc. is called an Optative Sentence.

Structure of Optative Sentence –
1.May + Subject + Verb + Object + Other Words !

Examples-

  1. May you have a happy new year !
  2. May you be successful !
  3. May you live long !
  4. May that building collapse next year !
  5. Would that he were alive !
  6. May it never happen !

Some sentences are written without using ‘May’. Here are some examples:

  1. Happy Birthday !
  2. Have a nice day !
  3. Happy Marriage anniversary !
  4. Merry Christmas !
